Colin Taylor Asset Alchemy 3 Days Ago I Almost Destroyed My Family Weekend Trying to Be Right

Three days ago, I almost destroyed my family weekend trying to be right.

I was confident about how I challenged assumptions.

I do it with my clients all the time.

Ask hard questions, push back, make them uncomfortable.

I'm good at it.

Or so I thought.

Then I spent a long weekend with my parents, my wife, and our three children.

I went up a day early. Health scare.

While I was there, my pops and I started talking, faith, family, his assumptions about my views.

I challenged him. The way I challenge my clients.

We Were Right at The Edge When My Family Walked In

We paused.

The conversation got a little heated.

But my pops wanted to continue the next day (this time with everyone).

My family was nervous.

They'd seen where we were headed as they walked in.

Nobody wanted the weekend to end badly.

That's when I realized something uncomfortable.

I wasn't challenging assumptions.

I was defending my position.

Trying to win.

There's a massive difference between challenging someone's thinking and creating space for their thinking to be challenged.

In the moment, I'd forgotten that.

(I didn't know it yet, but this moment would completely change how I work with clients. More on that in a minute...)

As we all sat down in the living room, I talked to my pops first.

Not to convince him.

To understand what he was worried about. To tell him what I (we) needed.

That shift, from defending positions to sharing concerns, ended up changing everything.

What happened next surprised all of us.

We had one of the most powerful (and necessary) conversations our family has had in years.

Everyone shared. Everyone learned something new.

Not because we all ended up agreeing.

Because we created space for assumptions to be challenged rather than defended.

Never ceases to amaze me how much you can learn about life and business in moments like this.

This is hard work.

We're still learning. We'll have to keep revisiting this.

But sitting there after that conversation, watching my family laugh and share...

I couldn't stop thinking about my clients.

How many of them were making the same mistake I'd just made?

How many were "challenging assumptions" the way I had...

By pushing, defending, trying to win?

And then it hit me.

This may be exactly what's happening with your messaging.

You're either not challenging your clients' assumptions at all...OR you're challenging them so hard you're creating resistance instead of openness.

And that's the skill AI can never teach you.

The moments that matter most don't show up on your content calendar.

This week's newsletter is going to be different.

A brief deviation.

Because while I was disconnected...three things became crystal clear.

The Skill AI Can't Replicate (And Why That Matters More Than Ever)

Everyone's talking about AI transforming business.

And they're right.

But here's what nobody's warning you about.

The most dangerous thing you can do right now is to outsource your strategic thinking.

Not your execution. Not your systems. Not your processes.

Your thinking.

Here's what I mean.

When you totally outsource your strategic thinking...

Whether to AI, vendors, or "best practices"...

You stop having conversations that challenge your assumptions.

But here's what I was reminded of, and it's worth sharing with you.

It's not enough to just "challenge assumptions."

You have to know the difference between...

Challenging assumptions...

(defending your position, pushing, trying to win)

and

Creating space for assumptions to be challenged...

(sharing concerns, understanding, making it safe to question)

One creates resistance. The other creates transformation.

AI can help you challenge. But it can't teach you how to create space.

That requires something AI doesn't have.

The ability to feel when you're pushing too hard.

To sense when someone's getting defensive.

To know when to shift from proving to exploring.

This shows up in your messaging.

Because while AI can help you write faster, format better, and produce more...

It can't replace the strategic foundation that makes any of that matter.

Let me be blunt.

If you don't know...

  • Who you're for (and against)
  • What transformation you deliver
  • Why it matters now
  • How you're different
  • How to create space instead of resistance

Then all AI does is help you create more noise, faster.

And help you push your clients away, more efficiently.

Now, depending on where you are right now, this might hit differently.

If you're barely marketing at all, you're not challenging assumptions enough

If you're hustling, but getting resistance, you may be challenging the wrong way

If you're using AI to scale your marketing, you're amplifying the problem

Wherever you are, here's what you need to know.

What This Actually Means: Clarity Before Tools

Moving forward, I'll be doubling down on one critical truth.

Your messaging isn't a content problem. It's a clarity problem.

And that clarity can't be AI-generated. It has to be...

  • Excavated from actual client conversations
  • Built on documented results, not theory
  • Developed through creating space, not just pushing

In a world where everyone has the same AI tools...

The only competitive moat is the thinking AI can't replicate.

These assets have to be identified, optimized, and activated.

That's the Asset Alchemy Method in action.

Why Most AI Strategies Amplify The Problem (Not Solve It)

If you've been following Asset Alchemy, you know we talk about the D.I.B.S Dilemma:

  • Decision Fatigue, The cognitive overwhelm of too many choices
  • Inflationary Pressures, Rising costs everywhere, including AI subscriptions
  • Buyer Bottlenecks, 86% of purchases stall in the "no decision" phase
  • Synthetic Content, The AI-generated tsunami burying authentic expertise

Here's the pattern I'm seeing.

Business owners are rushing to add AI tools to solve these problems.

But they're amplifying them instead.

More AI = More content = More noise = Harder to stand out = More decision fatigue = Lower conversions.

When you use AI without the skill of creating space?

  • More emails ignored.
  • More content creating resistance.
  • The problem scales.
  • The solution doesn't.

Which is why the Asset Alchemy Method works differently.

The Asset Alchemy Sequence: Why Phase 2 Is Where Most People Fail

[Inline image: Asset Alchemy Method phases diagram]

Phase 2 is where most people get stuck.

This is exactly why The Asset Alchemy Method follows a specific sequence.

Clarity > Confidence > Control

Most business owners are trying to jump straight to Phase 3, Control (building systems, adding AI tools, scaling execution).

They're doing this without Phase 2, Confidence: "Leverage What You Have."

Here's what Confidence actually means.

It's having documented evidence of what works.

  • Buyer Desires (Step 4): What your clients actually want (not what you assume)
  • Oxygen Offers (Step 5): Positioning that justifies premium investment (tested, not theorized)
  • Signature Method (Step 6): Your systematized expertise (captured, not just performed)

When these assets are documented and optimized, then AI becomes a force multiplier.

Without them? AI just amplifies your unexamined assumptions at scale.

The solution isn't more AI.

It's better messaging built on optimized assets.

Three Questions That Help You Diagnose The Real Problem

Before you chase another AI tool, figure out which problem you actually have.

Question 1:

"If I could only communicate ONE transformation I deliver, and had to prove it with documented results, what would it be?"

Can't answer in 60 seconds? You have a CLARITY problem.

Question 2:

"When's the last time someone challenged my assumptions about what my clients actually need?"

Been more than 30 days? You have a FEEDBACK problem.

Question 3:

"Am I documenting real client conversations, or am I making assumptions about what they want?"

Relying on assumptions? You have a CONFIDENCE problem.

(See how this connects to Phase 2, Confidence: "Leverage What You Have"? You can't leverage what you haven't documented. And you can't document accurately if your assumptions never get challenged.)

These aren't content problems. These aren't AI problems. These aren't visibility problems.

These are messaging problems rooted in unchallenged assumptions.

And no amount of AI will fix that.

In fact, AI without clear messaging is just expensive noise-making.

What's Coming (And What You Can Do Right Now)

Over the coming weeks, we're going to dive deep into...

  • Why your signature methodology is your only AI-proof asset
  • How to extract messaging from client conversations (not ChatGPT)
  • How to challenge assumptions in a way that creates space, not resistance
  • Building competitive moats AI can't replicate

But for now...

Take this as your permission slip to step away.

Not from your business. But from the noise.

And if you can, have a conversation that challenges your assumptions.

Because that clarity?

That's the asset AI can never create for you.

And it's the foundation everything else is built on.

Until next week, protect your thinking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between challenging assumptions and creating space for assumptions to be challenged?

Challenging assumptions means pushing, defending your position, and trying to win the argument. Creating space means sharing concerns, seeking understanding, and making it safe for others to question their own thinking. One creates resistance, the other creates transformation. This distinction applies directly to business messaging, where pushing too hard drives prospects away while creating space builds trust and openness.

Why does AI amplify messaging problems instead of solving them?

AI without clarity produces more noise, faster. If you don't know who you're for, what transformation you deliver, and how you're different, AI just scales those gaps. The D.I.B.S. Dilemma shows this pattern: more AI content creates more decision fatigue, more buyer bottlenecks, and more synthetic noise. The Asset Alchemy Method requires clarity and confidence before adding AI tools.

What is Phase 2 Confidence in the Asset Alchemy Method?

Phase 2 Confidence means having documented evidence of what works: Buyer Desires (what clients actually want), Oxygen Offers (positioning that justifies premium pricing), and Signature Method (systematized expertise). Most business owners skip straight to Phase 3 Control (systems and AI tools), which amplifies unexamined assumptions at scale instead of building on proven foundations.

How do you diagnose whether you have a clarity, feedback, or confidence problem?

Three questions reveal the answer. If you can't describe your one transformation with documented proof in 60 seconds, it's a clarity problem. If nobody has challenged your assumptions in 30+ days, it's a feedback problem. If you're relying on assumptions instead of documented client conversations, it's a confidence problem. The Asset Alchemy Method diagnostic addresses all three.
